A young person starting from what's already in their hands

Real Founders Don't Start With a Business Plan. Neither Should Your Kid.

Ask most people to picture a young entrepreneur and you get the same image: a slick pitch deck, a five-year plan, a spreadsheet of projections. It's what a lot of "kids' business" programs sell — a mini-MBA in shorts. There's just one problem. It isn't how real founders actually think.

What researchers found when they studied expert founders

Professor Saras Sarasvathy set out to learn how seasoned entrepreneurs make decisions. She studied dozens who had built companies from nothing — work she developed alongside Nobel laureate Herbert Simon. The pattern she found had a name: effectuation. And it was almost the opposite of the business-plan playbook.

Expert founders don't begin with a fixed goal and a plan to reach it. They begin with a "bird in the hand": who I am, what I know, and who I know. They take one small step with the means already in front of them, see what comes back, and let the idea take shape from there. The plan doesn't come first. The person does.

Why this matters for a child

Hand a ten-year-old a business-plan template and you teach them to imitate the look of entrepreneurship. Start them instead from what they already have — what they're into, what they're good at, a small problem they've actually noticed — and you teach them the real thing: how to make a move from where they stand. One builds a fake CEO. The other builds a kid who trusts that their own ideas are a legitimate place to begin.

How we do it at KidBiz

We don't give kids a menu of business ideas to pick from. Every child starts from their own bird-in-hand — an interest, a skill, a problem they brought from home — and builds outward from there into something they can make and pitch by the end of the camp. It's not about producing a polished plan. It's about a child discovering that who they already are is enough to start with. That's a lesson that outlasts any single idea.

Great founders don't start with a plan. They start with themselves. So does every child who walks through our door.
